What is LDAP?

The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol is the defacto industry standard application protocol for accessing and maintaining distributed directory information services over an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

There are a number of LDAP implementations - not just OpenLDAP - 389 Directory Server is one, Oracle Internet Directory, Apple OD are others, even Microsoft’s AD is based on LDAP.
